NZCT Supports Auckland’s Special Olympics
New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded a $1,369 grant to the Special Olympics Auckland Trust to help cover venue hire costs for a one-day regional basketball competition expected to attract hundreds of athletes from across the region and giving them the opportunity to compete, develop their skills and connect with other teams.
The tournament will be held at Barfoot & Thompson Stadium in Auckland on 5 September, bringing together Special Olympics clubs from the Upper North Island and Waikato as athletes work towards qualification for the 2029 Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games.
Many athletes live on limited incomes, so support with venue hire helps reduce one of the key costs involved in staging the event. Treasurer and Funding Coordinator Linda Ringrose says, “This grant from NZCT will help us keep participation costs down, making the competition more accessible for athletes from Special Olympics clubs across the upper North Island and Waikato. It will also free up other funds to improve and progress the wider sports opportunities we provide for our athletes throughout the year.”
Daniel Sexton, Special Olympics Auckland basketball player says, “I love playing against other teams from around the country. I can try out new skills learned at training. Also, it’s great to catch up with old friends from other teams.”
NZCT General Manager of Grants, Marketing and Communications Ben Hodges says, “This competition gives athletes the chance to test their skills, build confidence and take an important step towards the 2029 National Summer Games. NZCT can fund this community good thanks to the fundraising partnerships we share with local hospitality venues via their responsible gaming rooms.”
